Black armbands have been worn on the field to honour a death in the community for decades. This year, for TAC and AFL Victoria’s Road Safety Round, everyone in the community will wear a new kind of armband. One that will help us band together to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the road.
Across the 15-17th of July, every AFL Victoria club will run out onto the field for the TAC & AFL Victoria Road Safety Round. But this year, it’s not just the players who will be participating. It’s the entire community. To commemorate their commitment to eliminating deaths and serious injuries on the roads, captains, coaches, players and the surrounding community will wear their support in the form of a blue armband. These bands will be available at your local football club and handed out to anyone who wants to get behind the cause. On every armband lies a QR code containing stories from an ever-growing number of Victorians on why road safety matters to them.
The promotion of Road Safety messaging is particularly important to our junior participants, who need to learn the importance of road safety at a young age. The MPJFL stands behind the TAC and AFL Victoria, and would love all clubs to actively participate in the promotion of the Road Safety Round campaign.
So far this year, 132 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads, with 77 of those in regional areas – a concerning rise on the 59 regional deaths at the same time last year. Let’s all do our part to create a safe environment for our participants, as well as the wider Mornington Peninsula Community.
Clubs can extend their support and involvement in the TAC Road Safety Round, with all AFL Victoria-affiliated clubs given the opportunity to take part and earn up to $10,000 in funding by promoting road safety to their community as part of the TAC Club Rewards Program.
Everyone has a reason for wanting safer roads. We want to hear yours. Record your story on your smart phone, share it on your socials using #tacbandtogether, and wear the band this weekend to show your support. Let’s band together for safer roads.
